A message from Ankara states that it was an Italian submarine which sank the Turkish ship Rifha. Twenty survivors are now known to be safe. A message from Ankara on June 26 read: —• An unidentified submarine torpedoed the Turkish merchantman Rifha. 173 of whose 201 passengers were drowned. The torpedo broke the ship in two and only one lifeboat could be launched. The Rifha was going to Egypt, carrying 100 naval officers and men. described as the cream of the Turkish navy and mercantile marine. Italy and Germany had agreed to its safe passage.
