CARTERTON

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age" Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council last evening. There were also present Crs. E. McKenzie. H. Mortenson, L. M. Clark, C. E. Stevens, C. J. DeLacey, W. R. Harry, H. E. Jackson. Miss O. W. Wolters and the Town Clerk (Mr P. A. Cole). An apology for absence was received. from Cr. W. A. Hart. At a special meeting held prior to the ordinary meeting it was resolved that a meeting be held on July 29 for the purpose of making and levying the rates for the current year. The treasurer reported a dr. balance in the District Fund of £614 14s 9d, and a credit balance in the gasworks account of £444 17s 9d. It was decided that an application for a grant towards the New Zealand Crippled Children Society (Wairarapa branch) be considered at a later meeting. The Borough Solicitors, Messrs Hart and Tucker, forwarded their opinion of the sawdust nuisance from an old disused gravel pit in Lincoln Road. In regard to the complaint that sawdust was being blown on to adjoining property the solicitors considered that the Council was not liable. The late lessee of the property should be called upon to remedy the nuisance. It was resolved to notify the person concerned in the terms of the solicitors’ letter. The Board of Health wrote notifying its approval of the appointment of Mr Jas. Steel as assessor on the Board of Appeal to hear the appeal of the Carterton Borough Council, and stating that the same would be heard on Friday, July 11. A letter from the Takapuna Borough Council in connection with free travelling passes to members of the Armed Forces was received.

The Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade wrote asking the Council to assist in meeting the cost of the new switching system in connection with the siren alarm. It was decided to pay the account for the work. SJ. Mark's Lodge was granted a licjreiice for their hall in Holloway Street. The Clerk’s action in ordering 15 tons of bitumen for use next year was endorsed. It was decided that the footpath from Wakelin Street to Richmond Road be re-laid and graded for tarring at a future date, the spoil from which is to be used for filling in purposes on the new footpath in Richmond Road. Ten applications were received for the position of stoker at the Gasworks, Mr A. J. Dew being appointed to the position. A motion moved by Cr. Mortenson and seconded by Cr. Harry, that the resolution carried at the meeting held on May 28, in regard to the closing of Phillip Street for grazing purposes was carried. Tenders have been called for the lease of the septic tank reserve and of 13 received that of Mr L. S. Gallon was accepted. It was decided that a covenant be included in the lease calling upon the lessee to reasonably top dress the property during his seven years’ occupation. A sub-committee, consisting of Crs. L. M. Clark. H. Mortenson, W. R. Harry and Miss O. Wolters, was set up to control the State Theatre. The question of rental of the State Theatrclo the Carterton Badminton Club is to be dealt with by the sub-committee.

ENGAGEMENT CORLETT—SEXTON. The engagement is announced of Joan, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs E. J. Sexton, Carterton. to Private Francis (Jim), eldest son of Mrs Corlett and the late Mr T. Corlett, Carterton. Personal Items. Mr C. Phillips, of Clareville, has received word that his son. Pte. Thomas Phillips, is among those reported missing. The latter’s wife lives in Hawke’s Bay. When the Carterton school broke up yesterday the headmaster and teachers assembled to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Fisher, prior to their departure for Matamata in the Auckland district, where Mr Fisher has accepted a position under the Auckland Education Board. Mr W. Martin said Mr Fisher, who had been a teacher at the Carterton School for some years, had endeared himself to the children. On behalf of the teachers he asked the guests to accept a crystal bowl, and wished them both good health and good luck. Mr H. T. Leete spoke in a similar strain. Mr Fisher, on behalf of Mrs Fisher and himself, suitably returned thanks. Afternoon tea was then served. Footballers’ Ball. The Carterton Football Club will hold its annual ball on Monday. August 4. “Parcel Evening.” At the Belvedere Schoolroom on Friday evening a “parcel evening" will be tendered to Miss Ena Carter in honour c.f her approaching marriage. Good music and supper will be provided.
