Mr All'. Deadman, of Masterton, has returned home after having spent his annual leave in Rotorua. The Hon. H. G. R. Mason, Minister of Education, returned to Wellington yesterday from the West Coast of the South Island. The Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister of Health, returned to Wellington today from a visit to the East Coast and to Auckland. Mr C. Dahlberg, principal of Wairarapa Radios, Ltd., Masterton, will enter the New Zealand Air Force as a technician in the near future. He will be stationed at Harewood (Christchurch). The death occurred today, at her son's residence, 20 Fourth Avenue. Kingsland, Auckland, of Mrs Annie Paaske, widow of the late Mr John Paaske, of Carterton. She was 80 years of age. The funeral will take place in Auckland tomorrow. The Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture and Marketing, left Wellington last night, for Auckland, where he opened the National Dairy Confeience this afternoon. He is to visit Whangarei before returning to Wellington next Monday morning.
Driver Graham Coleman, son of Mr and Mrs J. Coleman, of Masterton, who is reported missing in Crete, was well known in sporting circles in Masterton. He was formerly a member of the Red Star senior cricket eleven and a Wairarapa representative player. Driver Coleman, who enlisted early in the war, was also associated with other branches of sport in Masterton.-
At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Romney Marsh Sheep Breeders’ Association, the following officers were elected: —President, Mr A. S. Murray, Mosgiel; honorary treasurer, Mr R. W. Matthews, Featherston; auditors, Messrs K. S. Glendinning and J. Corpe; to fill five vacancies on the council, Messrs J. G. Donald. Featherston;A. E. Harding, Dargaville; A. S. Holms. Waimahako; G. E. Allen, Masterton; S. P. Mosley, Clydevale. The death has occurred suddenly of Mr William Charles Adam Bell, a wellknown farmer of the Te Rehunga district, Hawke's Bay. He served in the Great War for three years, enlisting in Dannevirke. On his return in 1919. he commenced farming in the Te Rehunga district. He was a prominent member of the Dannevirke and District Re-1 turned Soldiers’ Association, being, at the time of his death, vice-president of the association. He was also a valuable member of the Dannevirke Loyal Odd Fellows’ Lodge.
Padre R. J. Griffiths, Invercargill, who was recently reported missing and believed to be a prisoner of war. volunteered to stay behind with the wounded when the New Zealand forces were evacuated from Crete. This information is contained in a letter which Mrs James Hargest has just received from her husband, Brigadier Hargest, The letter was written when the departure from Crete was being' made and in it Brigadier Hargest said that he had learned reliably that the Germans were treating prisoners of war very well.
The death has occurred of Dr. Arthur Challinor Purchas, at the age of 81, says a Press Association message from Auckland. Dr, Purchas. a wellknown surgeon, was the third son of the Rev. Dr. A. G. Purchas, Onehunga, who arrived in New Zealand in 1845. Dr. Challinor Purchas graduated in Edinburgh, and studied for a year in Vienna. He served as major in the New Zealand Medical Corps from the outbreak of the war in 1914. He was at one time president of the Auckland branch of the 8.M.A., and was president of the Australasian Medical Conference held in Auckland in 1913. His wife died during his absence at the war in 1916. Three sons survive.
