PATRIOTIC SOCIETY SUCCCESSFUL DANCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) A dance under the auspices of the local Patriotic Society was held on Saturday night. /Although the weather was rough there was a good attendance. The raffle for the ham was won by Miss Campbell and the ladies’ table set by Mr N. Allen (Wellington). The Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr and Mrs A. Spicer and by Miss Betty and Mr J. Priest. The produce stall was in charge of Miss Scrimegour. The music for the dance was supplied by McDonald's Merrymakers. Mr S. Mclntosh was M.C.
GOLF INTERCLUB MATCH. The local Golf Club played its first inter-club match of the season against Martinborough at Martinborough on Saturday. The day was fine and some interesting and close games were played. Fourball matches resulted in a win for the home team by one match. The following are the results (Martinborough players mentioned first in each case): —I. Charles and H. Harvey beat J. Riwai and M. Herangi; W. Martin and J. Pike beat W. Stewart and M. Perry; C. Moore and R. Baker Jost to T. Hume and G. Sutherland; R. Blathwayt and A. Harding lost to J. Carter and S. Hall; G. McLeod and A. Martin beat D. Tikao and M. Waiwera; F. Duffy and K. Arthur halved with S. Thomas and G. Hall; L. Speedy and H. Blundell lost to D. Didsbury and N. Hume; W. Kitching and J. Kershaw beat F. Lovegrove and N. Allen; R. Lovegrove and H. Matakane all square. BALL TO BE HELD BACHELORS AND SPINSTERS. At a meeting held recently by the bachelors and spinsters of the district it was decided to hold a ball, the funds of which will be given to the fund for the minesweepers and coastal units. A first-class orchestra has been engaged and lovers of dancing are assured of an enjoyable time. The supper arrangements, which are always the feature of such functions in this district, are in charge of a committee of ladies.
SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING OF COMMITTEE, At a meeting'of the local School Committee’apologies for absence were received front Messrs Riwai and Carter. It was reported that Miss Purnell, assistant teacher, would leave at the end of the month to take up another teaching position in Hawke’s Bay. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of appreciation to Miss Purnell for her services rendered by her during the past two years. The secretary reported that a receiving set had been installed in the school. The question of the school's proportion of the costs in connection with the new water supply was deferred to a later meeting.
Home Guard. The local Home Guard was to have held manoeuvres in the Whangaimoana area on Sunday, but owing to the heavy rain on Saturday night it was decided io cancel the parade. Women’s Institute. The Women's Institute monthly meeting, which was to have been held last Thursday, had to be postponed on account of the inclement weather. Personal Items. Mrs W. Sutherland, Kahutara, was a visitor to Trentham over the weekend. Mrs Nix is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs Hall, Kumenga. Mrs W. Collins is the guest of Miss N. McDougall. Mrs Simeon, Feilding, is visiting relatives in this district. Mr Gordon Mclssac, who was first assistant at the Lower Valley Dairy Company's factory during the past season. will shortly take up an appointment with the Railway Department. Mrs A. C. Burling, who underwent an operation recently in a private hospital in Martinborough, is progressing favourably towards recovery. Mr Don O'Brien. Tora, was a weekend visitor to his parents. Mr and Mrs J. O’Brien.
Miss Campbell is the guest of Mrs Guy Gillies, Waipatu. Miss Bessie Carter. Napier, is spending the mid-winter holidays with her parents. Mr and Mrs Carter, Kohunui. Miss Purnell, who has been assistant teacher at the local school for the past two years, and who will sever her connections with the school al the end of the present month in order to take up an appointment with the Hawke's Bay Education Board, will be stationed at Stortford Lodge School, Hastings. During her stay here Miss Purnell has made herself very popular with the children and her departure will be much regretted by them.
