WAIRARAPA GAMES NO SURPRISES ON SATURDAY. CARTERTON BEAT GLADSTONE. Play in the second round of the Wairarapa Rugby Union's inter-club competitions was continued in fine weather on Saturday afternoon. There were no surprises. Carterton beat Gladstone by a narrow margin in an exciting game al Carterton. Featherston beat Masterton by 9 points to nil in an interesting match at Memorial Park. Featherston failed to impress. Greytown beat Red Star at Greytown in a close contest. Red Star showed considerable improvement in their play. RESULTS AT A GLANCE SENIOR. Featherston 9, Masterton 0. Carterton 10, Gladstone 9. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

FEATHERSTON v MASTERTON. VISITING TEAM'S WIN. Featherston beat Masterion in a keen contest at Memorial Park, by 9 points to nil. Masterton showed great improvement on recent form and with a little more finish might have beaten the visiting team. The local team had the best of play in the first spell. The half time score was Featherston 3, Masterton 0. Masterton’s forwards were superior to Featherston but the back line lacked finish. For Featherston, Mahupuka kicked a penalty and Williams and Towsey each scored an unconverted try. Featherston failed to impress as a team. Their' play was ragged. Masterton, who received most of the ball from the scrums, lost several good scoring opportunities. Mr B. Hurley was referee.

CARTERTON v. GLADSTONE. NARROW WIN FOR HOME TEAM. A narrow victory was gained by the Carterton senior fifteen at Carterton on Saturday, when they defeated Gladstone by 10 points to 9. The championship leaders were tested to the full. From the commencement the game was hard fought, particularly in the second spell. The first score came to Gladstone from good play by Compton, who scored as a result of fast following up five minutes after play had commenced. No goal resulted. Soon afterwards F. Fitzgerald potted a goal. Then Tilyard got the ball from a scrum and sent the ball to Fitzgerald. Thompson and Hurley then handled it. and the latter passed to G. Udy, who went over to score. It was an excellent piece of passing. Brown failed to convert. Excitement ran high when Compton went over for his second try which was not converted. Play now became very willing, and Thompson following up fast beat the Gladstone players for the ball and scored a splendid try. No goal resulted. The first spell ended, Carterton 10, Gladstone 6. Carterton’s team was re-arranged for the second spell. Both sides tried hal'd to score, but the defence of both teams was sound. Then Gladstone scored by means of a goal kicked by J. Henson. Time was called with play in the Carterton territory. Mr W. Grantham was referee.

Wellington.—Athletic maintained its position as leaders in the Wellington Rugby Union’s senior first division championship by beating Hutt in the main game at Athletic Park on Saturday. The ordering off of two Athletic players in the second spell caused a sensation, but it served also to rouse Athletic to a great effort and resulted in a sweeping victory. The day’s biggest surprise was the defeat of Wellington by Johnsonville. Results were: Athletic 22, Hutt 6; Johnsonville 13. Wellington 12; Army 9.
