CARTERTON

PARKVALE INSTITUTE GIFTS TO MRS & MISS ADLAM. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a very large attendance of members of the Parkvale Women’s Institute and visiting institutes at the Parkvale Hall on Thursday afternoon ''When the opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs and Miss Adlam, who recently resigned the offices of president and secretary, respectively, and who are leaving the district. Mrs D. N. Adams presided, and extended a hearty welcome to those present. She said that they all had a very warm feeling in their hearts for Mrs Adlam and Miss Adlam. An excellent concert programme was provided by members of the Dalefield Women’s Institute, every item being encored. Competitions were also arranged and enjoyed. Afternoon tea was provided by .the members of the Parkvale Women's Institute. At a suitable interval in the, proceedings, Mrs D. N. Adams, the newlyelected president, said that during their residence in the Parkvale district, Mrs and Miss Adlam had taken a keen interest in local affairs and had been valued members of the Women's Institute. On behalf of the Institute members she asked Mrs Adlam to accept an electric night lamp. Miss S. Rayner, a junior member, presented Miss Adlam with a crystal jewel box and candlestick to match. Mrs Adlam and Miss Adlam suitably returned thanks.

GOLF CLUB COMPETITION RESULTS. Mr P. Nicholls, with a score of 30-36-66, was the winner of the Hill and Hughes Cup on Saturday. The next best cards were: G Pankhurst 29-30-59, R. Fisher 26-31-57. In a game for the Hill and Hughes. Buttons played at the weekend Messrs Harrington and G. W. Hart beat the holders, Whitburn and Gustofscn, 7 and.' 6.' Borough Council. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will take place on Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. A special meeting will be held earlier in order to confirm the striking of the rates for the current year. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs W. Adlam, accompanied ■by Mr and Mrs Downes, left today on a visit to Waikato. Mr and Mrs G. A. Vincent are visiting their daughter, Mrs Fenwick, of Gisborne. Word has been received by Mr E. Hatchard, of Carrington, that his son Driver Charles W. H. Hutchard, is reported missing. Driver Hatchard was the first recruit to enlist from Carrington and West Taratahi for overseas service, having signed up on the first day that enlistments were accepted. He went away as a driver in the petrol division in the A.S.C. of the First Echelon. In the Roll of Honour list appearing in the “Times-Age” a few days ago the name of Sgt. Douglas G. Callender, R.N.Z.A.F., was recorded as being killed in air operations. His father is Mr J. R. Callender, Dunedin. He was a nephew of Mr C. C. Callender of the Bank of New Zealand staff, Carterton. His mother is well known in Carterton, being a daughter of Mr and Mrs Stewart Forbes, early settlers of Carterton. Mr W. Campbell, of Marton, and erstwhile of Carterton. paid a weekend visit to Carterton.

A pleasant function took place at the Carterton branch of the W.F.C.A. on Friday night. Mr A. D. Taylor referred to the fact that two of their members who had been in the employ of the firm for some years were leaving io be married —Mr A. R. Tankersley and Miss A. Johnson. In making the presentation of an electric toaster to them on behalf of the stall he wished them good luck and happiness in their married life. Mr Tankersley suitably returned thanks. Mr Tankersley and Miss Johnson were married on Saturday and have left on their honeymoon trip. Upon their return Mrs Tankersley will resume her duties with the W.F.C.A. Mr Tankersley will later go into camp.
