IN AFRICAN THEATRES & SYRIA BRITISH OFFICIAL REPORT. SITUATION IN LIBYA UNCHANGED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) RUGBY, June 22. The capture of Jimma and confirmation of the occupation of Damascus are reported in a communique issued by British headquarters in Cairo, which states: “In Libya there is no change in the situation. “In Abyssinia patriot forces, led by British officers, captured the town of Jimma. The Italian general officer commanding had previously offered to surrender the town, but at the time there were no military or political advantages to be obtained from accepting the offer, which was remised. Since then advances and further success obtained by our troops in adjacent areashave altered the situation and at midday yesterday our troops formally took possession of the town. Operations on all fronts in the southern area are proceeding satisfactorily, in cooperation with patriot forces, which are closing in on the Italians from all sides. Further elements of the Italian 24th Division surrendered at Soddu. Fifteen miles west of Lake Moti our African troops, after a sharp engagement, captured prepared enemy positions, taking prisoner 130 Italians and 30 Colonial troops, also four guns and twenty machine-guns. In the DebraTabor area Indian troops, supported by patriot forces, are steadily closing in on the town.

“In Syria, as a result of continued pressure by British, Indian and Free French troops the Vichy forces yesterday evacuated Damascus, which has been occupied by Free French forces. In all other areas fighting is continuing, with local gains everywhere to our credit.” It is further learned in London that a column of Vichy motor transport, moving from Damascus to Beirut, was successfully machine-gunned by the R.A.F. and 36 motor vehicles were put out of action. In the Merjiyum area fighting continues.
