THE GOLF BALL
WHY IT HAS DIMPLES. Have you ever wonder why the surface of a golf ball is covered with dimples? These dimples have an unusual history. When the guttapercha ball was first introduced its surface was quite smooth. But the golfers of those days made an interesting discovery. They found that after the guttapercha ball had been jagged and cut by the club and through wear and tear on the course, the ball not only carried better but it also flew straighter. So some golfers started to nick the ball deliberately. From that, step it did not take long for the manufacturers to indent the balls themselves. Manufacturers have to be careful of the mould which makes the dimples on the balls. If the recesses are too shallow the ball does not fly true, and if they are too deep the ball does not carry well.
