Three hundred delegates attended the annual conference of the official Labour Party in Sydney during the weekend. The New Zealand Minister of National Service. Mr Semple, was invited to address the conference, and,said that the object of his visit was to try to cTeate a closer link between New Zealand and Australia. Mr Semple outlined the steps being taken in New Zealand I'or national security. "It is our bounden duty to seek the greatest measure of help possible for the people." he said. "We want the greatest understanding between New Zealand and Australia so that we can offer an effective resistance to any danger to our homes." "When 1 hear people snivelling about paying taxes it makes me sick." said Mr Semple in Lithgow yesterday at a civic reception to the New South Wales Minister of Labour. Mr Knight. "What■ about our boys in Greece, Crete and Syria?" Mr Semple added. "What about the men who are fighting our battle in order that we may be free? Should not ordinary Australians and New Zealanders be ashamed when they squeal about some little extra thing they are called upon to do?" Mr Semple said he had come to Australia to emphasise that the defence of New Zealand was wrapped up with the defence of Australia. They had everything in common and they were truly in a danger zone.
