Allied Progress in Syria FREE FRENCH ENTRY INTO DAMASCUS ANTICIPATED SUCCESSFUL ACTIVITY BY ROYAL AIR FORCE LONDON, June 15. The latest news from Vichy states that Allied forces have occupied Sidon, 25 miles south of Beirut. A Cairo communique states that Allied forces are in contact with Vichy troops along the whole line. Progress yesterday was slower than on previous days but an advance was made in the central sections. Allied forces are reported to have reached Jezzine, about 12 miles due east of Sidon. It is stated that the entry of Free French troops into Damascus may be expected shortly. An area of about 2,500 square miles of Syria is now in British hands. Air activities in the Middle East are reported m a Royal Air Force Headquarters communique which states that air support continues for Allied troops and naval units off the coast of Syria. German bombers, escorted by fighters were attacked when approaching British naval forces. Several fighters and a bomber were damaged and a number of other aircraft were attacked and damaged by fighters. Hostile troop positions were also bombed. Aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm torpedoed a hostile ship near Beirut.
