LAGOON TRAGEDY

—. YOUTH DROWNED. FALLS FROM LOG. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 15. A drowning accident occurred in the Waipa River, four miles from.Otorohanga,- this afternoon. The victim was Edward Albert Birchall, aged 16, son of Mr Alfred Birchall, sharemilker, Otorohanga. A group of boys was playing on a log in a lagoon formed by an inlet of the Waipa River, which was in flood. Edward Birchall. who was a cripple, and his two brothers, Brian Birchall, aged 12, and Dalton Birchall, aged 8, fell off the log into the river. Brian Birchall managed to reach the bank by his own efforts but Edward and Dalton were in difficulties. A youth named Harris, aged 17, jumped into the lagoon and rescued; Dalton Birchall. He returned to the water and after some difficulty, found Edward Birchall and brought him to the bank. He was, however, dead.
