4 The Mayor of Pahiatua, Mr S. K. Siddells, has been granted three months leave of absence so that he may attend a school of military instruction at Trentham. Mr John B. Hopkirk, of Wellington, is paying a short visit to Masterton. He is a veteran school teacher now retired, and was for many years in charge of schools in the Wellington Education district. Mr H. C. Moore, of Singapore, is spending his furlough in New Zealand. Mr Moore, who was formerly a resident of Masterton, took the opportunity of calling on many of his friends while passing through the town last week. The death has occurred in Waipukurau of Mr Peter Bollons, aged 72 years. Mr Bollons was secretary of the Waipukurau Patriotic Committee and the war relief association for many years, and for 30 years was secretary of the Manchester Unity Lodge of Oddfellows. Mr F. L. Combs. M.A., on the occasion of his retirement from the teaching service, after more than 40 years’ service, to assume an important post in the Education Department, was the guest at a farewell ceremony held by the New Zealand Educational Institute in Wellington. Mr Max Riske, president of the Wellington branch, was in the chair, and on behalf of the institute presented Mr Combs with an afternoon tea service for Mrs Combs, and a handsome book for himself. Tributes were paid to the services of Mr Combs to the cause of education by Miss Magill. Mr F. C. Lopdell, principal of the Training College, and Dr. Beeby, Director of Education. Mr Combs suitably replied.
