HAWKE’S BAY MEETING CHERRY PLUM HOOTED. GAY FOX WINS HURDLES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS. June 14. The success of Cherry Plum in the Hawke’s Eay Steeplechase today caused a hostile demonstration by a large section of the public. Cherry Plum is raced by Mr G. D. Beatson, president of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, and at the first meeting last week he was beaten into second place in the June Steeplechase by Anini. Today he reversed positions with Anini, overtaking her in the run in from the last fence, and when it was obvious that he was going to win, about 100 yards from the post, hooting and derisive jeering broke out on both the lawn and the members’ stands. The demonstration was intensified when Mr and Mrs Beatson, accompanied by the stewards, appeared in the birdcage for the presentation of the challenge trophy which accompanied the stake for the main jumping event. Mr G. Ebbett, a vice-president, was unable to make himself heard when presenting the cup to Mr Beatson, and the customary cheers which he called for were quickly drowned by another outburst of booing. *
The following statement was subsequently handed to the Press: “In view of the demonstration of a section of the public after the running of the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase, won by Cherry Plum, the judicial committee issues the following statement: Tn the June Steeplechase, run on June 7, Cherry Plum ran second to Anini. Cherry Plum hit a hurdle hard about six furlongs from the winning post and after being hard ridden with the whip finished a distressed horse. Anini, the winner, jumped perfectly and won easily. In the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase Cherry Plum met Anini 91b. better terms and jumped perfectly, while Anini hit four fences hard and nearly fell at the sod wall the last time round, and was just beaten by Cherry Plum at the finish. The judicial committee is satisfied with the running in the June Steeplechase and the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase.” A feature of today’s racing was the triple success of horses raced by Mr C. T. Keeble, Dusky Bay winning the maiden, Dainty Dell the hack sprint, and Black Majesty the open sprint. All three are trained by G. W. B. Greene, at Hastings. Other good performances were those of the Masterton horse, Gay Fox, who won the Whakatu Hurdles in his first start as a jumper, and Authoress, who beat the hack stayer carrying 10.2. The weather was fine and sunny, but with a cold wind, and the track was dead. The totalisator invest- | ments were £16,293, compared with £13,222 at the second winter meeting last year.
