AXIS CONVOY
ATTACKED IN CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN SHIP OF ABOUT 7,000 TONS A TOTAL LOSS. DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY PLANES. LONDON, June 13. In the Central Mediterranean British bombers attacked a convoy of enemy merchant ships escorted by destroyers and auxiliaries’. A number of direct hits were made on a shix, of about 7,000 tons, which was reported to be a total loss. One cf the British , airctaft was ■ attacked by an enemy fighter, whichwas severely damaged. In addition to ten enemy planes destroyed in yesterday’s attack on Malta another enemy seaplane was destroyed south of Sicily. Three British fighters were lost, but two of the pilots were rescued. Benghazi was successfully raided and shipping in the harbour was bombed. Two vessels were set on fire, olio from stern to stern. Anti-aircraft guns went, into action at Gibraltar when enemy planes appeared. A small number of bombs were dropped, but there were no casualties or damage. It was the first attack s.ncc September of last year.
