HISTORY OF PIONEERING DAYS. PUBLICATION IN BOOK FORM. A series of articles which have appeared in the "Wairarapa Times-Age” during the past three years, dealing with the early history of the Wairarapa, have been published in book form. The articles were specially written for the “Times-Age” by Mr Charles Bannister, of Church Street, and. the new publication, for which the Masterton Printing Co. is responsible, will be welcomed by many residents and students who wish to have a permanent record of Wairarapa’s early days. Attractively produced, “The Early History of the Wairarapa - ’ contains a picturesque language by one coeval out its 152 pages, touching on life in the earlier days of th*? district. The publication is enhanced in value by the inclusion of several photographic reproductions depicting the first house built in Masterton. Queen Street, in the early days, the first public hospital and Masterton's original plough. Portraits of" Mr Joseph Masters, the founder, of Mr Henry Bannister, “the father" of Masterton, and of Mr and Mrs Charles Bannister, are also included.
In a preface, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan. states: "It is an epitome of life in the pioneering days that may well serve as a permanent illustration of those sterling qualities, set in simple wealth of interesting detail throughwith the settlement. It is fitting that this should be the work of one of Masters's grandsons, Charles Bannister. Out of the rich storehouse of his memory, he has done a public service and in these testing days for all I commend his story, particularly to the youth of the district.”
