Replying to congratulations sent to him by the Governor-General of Australia. Major-General Freyberg. personally and on behalf of all ranks in Crete, expressed heartiest thanks. “In the grim campaign,” he said, “our troops did everything men could do. and though eventually they were forced to withdraw, they have the satisfaction of knowing that their fight was not in vain. I know that the losses in the heavy lighting were severe, and to those in Australia who have suffered wc of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force send deepest sympathy. Wc have the greatest admiration for the many exploits of our Australian comrades, and look forward to a continuation of our happy association with the Anzacs.”
