PORTUGUESE ISLANDS
UNITED STATES REPLY TO PROTEST NO AGGRESSIVE INTENT. BUT RIGHT OF SELF-DEFENCE RESERVED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, June 11. The Associated Press says Portugal has delivered a formal protest against President Roosevelt’s references to the Azores and Cape Verde in his recent, broadcast. Dispatches from Lisbon indicate a concerted Portuguese Press campaign demanding clarification of Mr Roosevelt’s remarks. The Secretary of State, Mr Hull, sent a Note to the Portuguese Minister giving an assurance that the United States harboured no aggressive intentions against the sovereignty and integrity of the Portuguese islands, but reserved the right of self-defence, adding: “The Government of the United States cannot but view with increasing anxiety the constantly expanding acts of aggression on the part of a certain belligerent Power which now threatens the peace and safety of the countries in this hemisphere.”
