AT THE GATES
FREE FRENCH UNITS NEAR DAMASCUS LONG DISTANCE COVERED IN TWO DAYS. BRITISH PARTIES LANDED ON COAST. LONDON, June 11. Free French units are now at the gates pf Damascus, capital of Syria. A communique from their headquarters at Cairo issued early this morning states that General de Gaulle’s troops are near the city, having covered 63 miles from the frontier in two days. It is confirmed in Cairo that small British naval units landed in Syria ahead of the Allied troops advancing from Palestine. The naval forces assisted in effecting the crossing of the River Litani, countering attempts by the pro-Petain troops to blow up the bridge. These forces were apparently ahead of the land advance. It is now learned that the defenders withdrew from Tyre without attempting to hold the town. A British United Press correspondent says that the R.A.F. bombed harbour several times early this morn-' ing, opposed by anti-aircraft action.
