CABLES FROM SOLDIERS

DATE OF LODGING AVAILABLE ON MESSAGE. Recipients of cablegrams from soldiers overseas can easily ascertain from the message the date on which it was lodged by the sender, by perusing the preamble. The first figure or figures in the preamble after the words “office origin omitted" indicate the date of the month on which the cablegram was lodged. The other figures and letters in the preamble have no secret meaning but refer to the number of the cablegram, the number of words and the class in' which they are grouped and the class in which the cablegram is grouped. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. The desirability of the date of dispatch being included, in cablegrams to next-of-kin from soldier sons and husbands overseas was emphasised in an urgent question asked by Mr 3. Lee (Democratic Labour, Grey Lynn), on behalf of Mr Barnard (Democratic Labour, Napier), of the Acting-Prime Minister, Mr Nash. Mr Lee said that the inclusion of the date would dispel much anxiety. Mr Nash said that representations had already been made to the cable and army authorities overseas. In the last few days some cables had been received with the date of dispatch included and apparently the Government's requests had been given favourable consideration.
