KILLED IN ACTION
WELL KNOWN MASTERTONIAN. LANCE SERGEANT McWHINNIE. Word has been received in Masterton that Lance Sergeant I. B. McWhinnie, son of Mrs and the late Mr J. McWhinnie, of Cole Sreet, Masterton, was killed in action on May 20. Lance Sergeant McWhinnie, who was 23 years of age, was educated at the Wairarapa High School, Masterton, where he was a prefect in 1935 and a member of. the school’s cricket, football and rifle teams. On leaving school he was employed on the staff of Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., and joined the military forces shortly after war commenced. He played for some years with the Red Star senior cricket team, being a good wicketkeeper and a steady batsman, generally opening the innings for his team. The sympathy of the residents of Masterton will be extended to the relatives in their bereavement.
LOST LIFE IN CRETE. DEATH OF PRIVATE W. JOHNS. News was received last night that Private'.‘‘Bill” Johns, youngest son of Mr and Mrs J. B. Johns, formerly of Masterton, and brother of Mrs A. Esler, of Church Street, Masterton, had been killed in action in Crete on May 20. He attended the Masterton Central and Technical schools; and was a tyler by trade. Deceased, who was 22 years of age, left Masterton to reside at New Plymouth about three years ago. While in Masterton he played football for the Old Boys' Club, being very popular among his clubmates. He left New Zealand with the Second Echelon. The relatives will receive the sympathy of the residents of Masterton. in their bereavement.
