Mr R. Harding has been unanimously re-elected chairman of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. Advice has been received that Pte. Len Blackley, of Maslerton, has been evacuated from Crete and is fit and '•veil. Mrs E. Jones, of Cornwall Street, Masterton, has received cabled advice that her son, Lance Corporal Jones, had returned safely to Egypt from Crete. During the service at St. John’s Church, Dannevirke, on Sunday evening, the vicar, Canon G. B. Stephenson, became unwell and had to go home. He' is confined to bed and will have to rest for a while. Mrs Coley, High Street, Masterton, has received a cablegram from her husband. Corporal T. Coley, who is a member of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, stating that he is safe and well. Mr F. W. Rogers, of Kahautara, has been appointed caretaker of the Masterton Racing Club’s Opaki Racecourse. Fifty applications were received for the vacancy. Mr Rogers has taken up his new duties. The funeral of the late Mr James Liddington took place in Masterton yesterday, there being a large attendance of mourners. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by Major O. E. Ransom, of the Salvation Army. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence. The pall-bearers were Messrs R. Maxted, W. Davis, S. Benge, R. Davis, V. F. Schroder, and R. Thornton. At a meeting of the directors of the New .Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, held in Christchurch yesterday, Sir Robert Anderson, Invercargill, was elected chairman of the New Zealand board of the company in place of the late Mr George Gould, who had been chairman since 1923. The vacancy on the board was filled by the appointment -of Mr T. J. Maling. Christchurch. The War Office (a British Official Wireless message states) announces that Lieutenant-General Sir James Marshall-Cornwall, whose appointment as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief appeared in the London Gazette of June 3, has assumed his appointment of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief British troops in Egypt, which is a component part of General Wavell's command in the Middle East.
