PROGRESS OF ALLIED FORCES IN SYRIA

Pincer Movement Developing Towards Damascus VICHY REPORTS OF HEAVY FIGHTING UNCONFIRMED FRENCH OFFICIALS CO-OPERATING IN AREAS TAKEN OVER LONDON, .Line 9. Allied, forces advancing into Syria are now well on their way towards Beirut, the principal port for the capital, Damascus. They left Tyre (the capital of ancient Phoenicia) this morning and crossed a river five miles to the north. They have thus covered a third of the way to Beirut. Further east, other forces are advancing from a general line 40 miles south of Damascus. The R.A.F. and Australian Air Force have given continued support to the troops. Although Vichy messages continue to speak of heavy fighting, no indication has been given of the extent of the opposition to the Allied forces. In areas already taken over, French officials are co-operating with the Allies. Vichy has protested to London and Washington against the invasion of Syria.
