HOME GUARD USEFUL PARADE YESTERDAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) Those N.C.O’s. and Guardsmen who have had rifles issued to them paraded yesterday. They were taken on a route march and were given training-in v-field exercises, target indication, etc. Carterton Senior Football Team. Up till and including last Saturday the Carterton senior football team had scored 105 points and had only 29 points registered against them. Returned Soldiers’ Association. The annual meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held tonight in the Band Room. The business will include the election of officers. Soldiers Return to Camp. A number of local soldiers returned to camp on Saturday afternoon, and there was a large crowd at the station to see them off.'. Unpleasant Playing Conditions. The Carterton football field on Saturday was not a very pleasant place to play on. Sheep are grazed on parts of the ground which have been fenced off . A gate leading to the oval had been left open and the sheep strayed on to the playing area, making the surface unpleasant to play on. It is hoped in the interests of the players that the sheep will be kept off the oval In future. Dalefield Road Reserve. In an advertisement in today’s issue tenders are called for the lease of the Carterton Borough Reserve the on Dalefield Road for a term of 7 years as from August 1, 1941. Particulars of lease may be seen at the Borough Office, Carterton. Tenders will close on Tuesday, June 24. There are 39 acres 2 roods in the reserve. Bride-to-be Honoured. There was a large attendance at the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening when a “parcel evening” was tendered to Miss Rona Howie in honour of her approaching marriage. Music for dancjjj r g was supplied by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra and extras were played by Mrs Williams and Mr L. Hopkins. Items were rendered by Messrs A. Kay, A. Goulden and Mrs McMinn. During the evening Mr Bliss called upon Miss Howie to open the presents. Mr L. Herrick suitably replied on behalf of his fiancee. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz was Mr McKenzie and partner. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr D. Jenson. Supper was served and a very enjoyable gathering was brought to a close at midnight. GOLF SATURDAY’S GAMES. The following were the best cards handed in for the fourball bogey round played on the Taratahi links on Saturday:—Harrington and Jackson, 3 up; Riggs and Gustofsen, 2 up; Whitburn and Colson. 2 up; Clark and W. Knowles, 2 up; Johansen and Callender, 1 up; Roydhouse and Court, all square; Hart and P. Pankhurst, 1 down; Goodin and Tankersley, 1 down]" Booth and Murray, 1 down. The following were the best scores recorded in connection with the ladies' competition held on Saturday:—Mrs Johansen, 9, 20, 72; Mrs Orr, 94, 20, 74; Miss Smart, 94, 19, 75; Mrs Forbes, 103, 27, 76: Mrs Colson, 93, 17, 76; Mrs Candy, 93, 17, 76; Miss Peters, 108, 31, 77; Mrs Harrington, 96, 17, 79; Mrs. Murray, 98, 19, 79. Mrs Johansen was the winner of the flag competition. Personals. Miss I. Maxwell, of the Carterton District High School staff, has received another position and will leave here in the course of a few weeks. Miss J. Finlayson, who has been spe? ding a holiday with Mrs S. Green, Carterton, returned to her home in Christchurch on Saturday. Mr E. 11. Fisher, who has been on the staff of the Carterton school’s secondary department for the past 8 years, has accepted ah appointment under the Auckland Education Board, and will leave about the end of the month to take up his new duties at the Matamata District High School. When the Hutt Army team defeated Wellington on Saturday Jack Walker, who played for the Carterton team and Wairarapa for some years and as well as the Bush, was playing in th/ forwards. D. Dalton, the Army captain, spoke very highly of Walker as a forward
