RIVER BATTLES
ITALIANS SUFFER HEAVILY IN ABYSSINIA THOUSANDS OF PRISONERS TAKEN. SPEED & DASH OF AFRICAN TROOPS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.5 a.m.) RUGBY. June 8. A Nairobi communique states: “Following on the successful crossing of the River Omo, in Abyssinia, in two places, our columns are advancing from the east and south and Dressing forward. The speed and dash of our East African and West African troops prevented the enemy completing road demolitions. The enemy lost over a hundred dead at the northern crossing alone. Captures hitherto made in the Omo battle include 3,000 Europeans and 1,000 Eritreans a number of guns, 200 lorries, many machine-guns and large quantities of other war material. The enemy is being vigorously pursued.”
