REGENT THEATRE

‘•CALL A COP.” George Formby’s second successive topical comedy. “Call A Cop," will be shown tonight at the Regent Theatre. As George is rare daft on motoring and motor-cycling and as the many speed sequences of the film provided ample opportunity for both, he had lots of fun. George as a War Reserve policeman with ambitions to get into the Flying Squad, has to undergo a stern trial before his promotion, with his nearest rival stooping to the dirtiest tricks to thwart him. These high-gear-ed action sequences are as thrilling as they are funny, with George as ever, performing the impossible in the way of risking his neck on bucking motorcycles, a Wall of Death, a trampolene net on music hall stage and a miniature motor car which darts between the heels of horses, and lorries and uses the gutters of adjoining roof tops for tram lines. The story is about saboteurs who are going to blow up Britain’s newest warship, being built at a shipyard George patrols as a War Reserve constable. Many of the motor cycle scenes were shot at a speedway in Essex. Outstanding featurettes include the latest March of Time, covering America’s great armament effort and the Air Mail News features the attack on Keren. Plans are at Nimmo’s and the theatre- and early booking is essential.
