SOLDIER HONOURED LANCE-CORPORAL BEAVEN MADE PRESENTATIONS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Last evening members of the WaiAarapa South County Council staff; the „ overseers and several members of the Council gathered at the County Office to make presentations to LanceCorporal Basil Beaven, who was senior clerk to the county and during his father's illness had attended to the duties of County Clerk. Lance Corporal Beaven is now on leave from military duties. Mr H. J. McKenzie referred to the excellent capabilities displayed by Corporal Beaven as senior clerk to the County, and to the splendid service he had rendered the county. It was pleasing to note that their guest had been made a Lance-Corporal after a few months in camp. He felt sure that it would not be long before he would be wearing “pips” on his shoulder. The speaker reminded Lance-Corporal Beaven of Kipling's advice to soldiers: “Shoot straight, keep clean, fear God, and honour the King.” He asked LanceCorporal Beaven to accept from the outside staff an engraved illuminated Omega wristlet watch. Mr 'J. A. Wallace, County Overseer, spoke in a similar strain. Mr F. Court, County Chairman, apologised for the absence of Cr. A. E. Reid, and called upon Mr D. McGregor, formerly a chairman, to say a few words. Mr McGregor referred to the splendid service their guest had rendered the county and wished him the best of luck and a safe return to New Zealand. Mr F. Court referred to the work of
Lance-Corporal Beaven as assistant clerk and the capable manner in which he had at all times carried out his duties. He asked Lance-Corporal Beaven to accept from the council a leather jacket. Lance-Corporal Beaven feelingly returned thanks. The singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow" brought a pleasant gathering to a close.
