DAMAGE IN RHODES

HEAVY ATTACK BY BRITISH BOMBERS HANGARS & OTHER BUILDINGS HIT. FURTHER RAIDS ON SYRIA & AFRICA. LONDON, June 6. An aerodrome on the island of Rhodes was raided by heavy bombers of the R.A.F. Bombs straddled the runways and hangars and buildings were hit. A number of violent explosions were followed by fires, A raid was also made on Italian aircraft at Aleppo, in Syria. One plane was destroyed by a direct; hit. Bombs also hit the hangars and tower and a column of black smoke rose over the aerodrome. In North Africa bombs were dropped on military buildings at Derna and on the harbour of Benghazi, where the central mole was damaged. In Abyssinia planes bombed and machine-gunned enemy positions and mechanical transport. From all these operations one machine is missing. A Reuter message states that bodies were still being recovered from the debris in Alexandria, where the death roll is more than 150. The attack was concentrated on the civilian quarters of the city.
