WELFARE LEAGUE
MEETING IN MASTERTON. REPORTS ON MONTH'S ACTIVITIES. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday afternoon at the Midland Hotel. Those present were: Mesdames Drummond (in the chair), S. Fletcher. G. H. Collie, L. Hunter. A. W. McKenzie, S. J. Munn, S. L. P. Free, H. P. Harrison, J. B.- Carrutlv ers. S. N Kilgour and Miss Boddington Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. F. Watson. H. E. Pither, E. J. Coleman, R. Whyborn, Misses Kummer, Guild and Beiliss. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mesdames Whyborn, Coradine, Daniell and Miss Kummer. A letter in regard to the Free Kindargarten school was received. Mrs Harrison reported on visits paid to the Public Hospital during May, when the usual teas, etc., were given. It was decided on the motion of Mrs McKenzie, seconded by Mrs Hunter, that a letter be sent to Miss Barnett thanking her for her help and hospitality to members when visiting the hospital. The visitors for June will be: June 10, Mesdames A. W. McKenzie, L. Hunter and Carruthers. June 24, Mesdames Drummond. Collie and Harrison. Mrs McKenzie reported on various cases attended to. An assortment of new children's garments that had been knitted and donated to the league was displayed. It was decided to thank the donor. Mrs Carruthers reported on a visit paid to the Buchanan Home, twelve members being present. Miss Guild reported that anyone desiring news of relatives overseas or in connection with sending parcels, especially to prisoners of war. could obtain forms from the Red Cross Society in Masterton, this being the only way to get authentic news. Mrs Fletcher reported on the special meeting attended by her on May 28 in regard to social evils. The League passed a motion expressing sympathy with the remits before the meeting. It was stated that Mrs Carruthers would attend to gathering and packing parcels for the A.N.A. Club this month. A vote of thanks was passed to a bridge club for a donation of £1 ss. Mrs McKenzie. District Commissioner for Girl Guides, brought before the notice of members tho fact that 100 tons of waste cotton material were required by the R.N.Z. Air Force for cleaning purposes. Tho Guides throughout New Zealand have undertaken to collect this material. In Masterton the collection would take place from June 9 to 21. Householders are requested to have their parcels of cotton waste material ready for the Guides when they call, for the task of calling at every house in Masterton will be no light one. The size required is 24 x 18 inches, with a small proportion of smaller pieces if tho larger size is not available.
