COMING AVALANCHE
OF AMERICAN ARMS PRODUCTION BELGIAN MINISTER'S OBSERVATIONS. PEAK NOT YET REACHED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, June 6. “There will be no peak in production till America is actually in the war,” said the Belgian Minister of Finance, M. Gutt, on his return from the United States and Canada. “At present,” he said, "the atmosphere in the United States is tense and sympathetic, but there is no war atmosphere. Current American opinion is mostly for us when the war news is good, but when it is otherwise Americans are inclined to say it is no use helping the British. Only an educated minority realise that when things are bad help is most urgent. For months that has been the whole of the American problem.” However. M. Gutt said, he returned full of confidence. • “We must wait a few months,” he said, “and then see what Mr Churchill described as an avalanche.” M. Gutt instanced the present tempo of American industrial effort in the fact that one steel plant was turning out steel for a 7000-ton merchantman every five days and another was turning out a tanker weekly. Two plants together were producing steel for 1,000,090 tons of shipping yearly. A factory built since November in a few months would be producing 100 aeroengines daily.
