YOUNG CONQUERORS
EXAMPLES FROM HISTORY. NAPOLEON EMPEROR AT 35. Hannibal was only 29 when he defeated the Roman army in Gaul, and 31 when he routed the Romans at Cannae. Even before that he had brought parts of Spain under the authority of Carthage. Alexander the Great, King of Macedon, had conquered a world when he died at 33. When he was 22 he captured many cities in Asia Minor and then conquered Phoenicia and Syria. At 30 he marched into India, crossing the Indus, and gained other great victories. He was organising the great empire he had conquered and was planning an expedition into Arabia when he died. Napoleon was Emperor of France at 35 after many military triumphs, and then subdued nearly the whole of Europe while in the prime of life. He was only 46 when he was defeated al Waterloo. His great adversary, the Duke of Wellington, was born in the same year as Napoleon—l769—and at 39 was a successful soldier in the Peninsula War. At 43 he routed the French armies at Salamanca and liberated Europe at Waterloo three years later. Finally, there was Wolfe, who, at the age of 32, took Quebec after routing the French under Montcalm. He died in the battle, but it resulted in Canada becoming a British possession.
