MANY ATTACKS
MADE BY R.A.F. IN MIDDLE EAST ITALIAN & OTHER PLANES DESTROYED. HEAVY DAMAGE AT BENGHAZI. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 11.40 a.m.) ■ RUGBY June 4. A. R.A.F. Middle East, communique slates: "An Italian three-engined aircraft was shot down by our lighter.; into the sea off Malta. The crew were last seen on the wing of their aircraft. "While on a reconnaissance flight off the island of Cephalonia. one of outaircraft attacked an Italian seaplane which was taxying on the water and destroyed it. "In Cyrenaica, South African fighters machine-gunned a number of enemy aircraft on the landing; ground at Gambitt. destroying throe of them.' "Benghazi was raided during the night of June 2 and large fires were started c.n moles and among militaVy buildings. I "A petrol dump al Beirut, in Syria?, was bombed and machine-gunned by our aircraft yesterday. “Enemy positions in Abyssinia, particularly at Debarech, were attacked. From all these operations one of our aircraft, is missing. Two aircraft reported missing in communiques of June 2 and June 3 are now known to have returned safely to their bases."
