MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SITTING IN MASTERTON. TORCHES INSUFFICIENT LIGHT FOR CYCLISTS. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate's Court was held this morning. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.. was on the Bench. Inspector J. McGregor proceeded against Mrs Patricia Tobin for cycling without a light and without a rear reflector and S. Cherry for cycling without a light. Mr McGregor pointed out that it was becoming a practice for cyclists to carry a torch at night instead of a fixed light. Cyclists rode without a light until they were caught, when they flashed on the torch. The carrying of a torch at night by cyclists was not in compliance with the by-laws, said Mr Lawry. He stated that he would enter a conviction against Mrs Tobin, with costs, and would impose a fine of 10s and 10s costs on the second charge. Cherry was fined 10s and 10s costs. Jack Avelyn Brooks (Mr R. R. Burridge), James Donald, Phillip Allan Evans, John Leonard Griffith, Richard James Griffiths, Dawson Thomas Herbert. Maxwell Neil McCalmont and David James Olliver were each fined 10s ar\d 10s costs for not having wireless licences. Mr E. J. Burke, radio inspector, prosecuted. Transport (Wairarapa) Ltd. were fined 10s and 10s costs for having operated a heavy motor vehicle carrying an indication disk issued for a different vehicle. Mr J. Macfarlane Laing appeared for the company and Inspector J. McGregor prosecuted. Jack Lionel Gill was fined 5s and 10s costs for driving a car without a rear light.
