GOLF CONTEST FINAL FOR YULE CUP. ("Times-Age” Special.) The final for the Yule Cup was played on the Carterton links on Monday when Dodson beat Harrington 2 up. lii the final of the first flight Goodin Hill 2 and 1; in the final of the second flight Nix beat M. Knowles 2-1, and in the final of the third flight A. E. Pankhurst beat W. Knowles 6-5. The winner of the Stableford bogey competition was W. Johansen (28, 8, 36), and the winner of the fourball bogey competition, Johansen and Whitburn, 4 up. CARD PARTY WOMEN'S LABOUR LEAGUE. There was a good attendance at the euchre tournament held in the Band Room yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the Carterton Women's Labour League. The first prize was won by Mrs Cox and the second by Mr Edwards. The consolation went to Mrs Edwards. Afternoon tea was served. Odd Fellow Honoured. There was a large attendance of members of the Loyal Heart of Oak Odd Fellows’ Lodge at a function held last evening in honour of Private Basil H. Gayfer. The first part of the evening was taken up in card playing, after which tables were laid and supper served. P.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey , presided in the absence of the N.G., for whom an apology was received. A number of toasts were honoured. The chairman in proposing the health of Private Gayfer, said that .members were proud to be able to do honour to a soldier rjember. The speaker referred to sacrifices that had been made by members of the New Zealand forces. Among the casualties were several members of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, one of whom had been killed, and another was reported missing. He wished Private Gayfer good lucK; good health and a safe return to Carterton. P.G’s. Bros. A. J. Lindop and G. S. Bruce (Wellington District.) spoke in a similar strain. Bro. Gayfer expressed his appreciation of the kind words of the speakers, and for the useful gifts presented to him, which comprised a well-filled tobacco pouch and a money belt. Soldiers to be Entertained. The residents of Clareville, Carrington and West Taratahi on Thursday evening will do honour to two residents of the district who have joined the military forces—Privates O. Daysh and McKenzie —when a social gathering and dance will be held in the Clareville Hall. Presentations will be made to the guests of the evening. Personal Items. Mrs W. W. Mansfield, of Petone, is a visitor to Carterton and is staying with her daughter, Mrs- W. S. King. Mrs J. A. Wallace, of Conolly's Line. Belvedere, who has been at Hamner Springs, has returned home. Mr Wm. Johnston, of Moore Street, Featherston, has received a cable from his son, Pte. AV. Johnston, stating that he is fit and well. Mr Gordon Stark, of the staff of the local branch of the W.F.C.A., has found it necessary to again enter the hospital for treatment. Word has been received by Mr E. H. Hawker. Carterton, from his son. Pte. Ross Hawker, that he has safely reached his destination. “Parcel Evening” at Dalefield. A “parcel evening” will be tendered io Mr C. Knutson by members of the Dalefield Hockey Club in the Dalefield Hall this evening. Mr Knutson is an old player of the club. Good dance music will be provided. Vital Statistics. In IV'/jy there were six births and one marriage in Carterton, without a death. -In May, 1940. there were 9 births, 4 marriages and one death. A “Parcel Evening.” At the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening a “parcel evening” will be tendered to Miss Rona Howie in honour of her approaching marriage. A euchre tourney will be held for nondancers.
