PRISONERS OF WAR
PARCELS SENT BY RED CROSS SOCIETY. FOOD SENT IN EVERY PACKET. As many New Zealanders are probably prisoners of war as the result of losses in the Greek campaign it is of interest to know that every prisoner of war receives a parcel from the British Red Cross and Order of St. John. The food in these parcels is specially planned to supply what is lacking in the German camp rations. Food sent in every parcel comprises: 1 box cheese, such as Cheddar, cheese and Celery, Welsh rarebit, etc.; 1 packet chocolate, milk or plain; 1 tin fish such as herrings, sardines, pilchards, salmon, etc.; 1 tin fruit, such as pineapple, peaches, fruit salad, etc., or 1 packet dried fruit such as dates, prunes, figs, etc., or 1 pudding such as apple pudding, jelly, pancake batter, etc.; 1 tin jam. or honey or marmalade, or syrup; 1 tin margarine or dripping; 1 tin hot meat, such as steak and kidney pudding, beef stew, curried mutton, minced steak, etc.; 1 tin cold meat, such as ham and tongue roll, pressed beef, galantine of chicken, veal and ham pie, etc.; 1 tin dried milk; 1 tin sausages or bacon or 1 packet dried eggs; 1 packet sugar; 1 tablet soap; 1 packet tea; 1 tin vegetables, such as beans, peas, spinach, etc.; 1 tin special food rich in Vitamin C. And one or more of the following: Cocoa and milk powder; mannite, etc.; custard powder (full cream milk); paste, fish or meat; sweets, such as boiled sweets, “Maltesers,” barley sugar, extra chocolate, etc.; table salt.
