ENEMY AIR LOSSES

FIGURES IN THE MIDDLE EAST 1243 PLANES DESTROYED IN FIVE MONTHS. COST IN BRITISH MACHINES RELATIVELY SMALL. LONDON, June 2. During May enemy losses in planes in the Middle East were nearly four times greater than Britain’s. At least 244 enemy planes were destroyed, as compared with 65 British, and a number of the pilots of the lost British machines are safe. Since the beginning of the year the enemy has lost 1243 planes in the Middle East, apart from those which were damaged and probably failed to get back to their bases. A large number of the 244 brought down in May were destroyed in Crete. In Iraq, where the R.A.F. wiped out the rebel air force in one week, our score was 54. Since operations started on all fronts in the Middle East, including Iraq, at least 1696 enemy planes have been destroyed for certain and many others damaged. The total British losses are 260.
