GLORIOUS EPISODE
IN NEW ZEALAND MILITARY HISTORY ORDEAL ENDURED GALLANTLY BY TROOPS. EPICS OF PERSONAL BRAVERY. (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.) CAIRO, June 2. The dramatic announcement of the evacuation of Crete by the Imperial forces under Major-General Freyberg was made at 7 p.m. yesterday in Cairo. The story of the great fight put up by the New Zealand and other Imperial troops in face of the terrific air attacks cannot yet be fully told, but the fact that they stood up to the dive-bombing attacks for long periods over nearly a fortnight and. had to fight at night as well shows what they had to overcome in the resistance of the Nazi air-borne troops. It was a glorious episode in the history of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, one studded with epics of personal bravery and courage. There can be none more disappointed than the New Zealanders at the fact that they had to withdraw in face of the pressure the enemy brought to bear.
