REPORTED SAFE
NFW ZEALAND PETTY OFFICER ON HOOD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 2. One of the complement of Hood. Petty Officer W. A. Campbell, / aged 24. is reported safe, according to a private cablegram received from Greenoch, Scotland, by his mother, Mrs T. Campbell, of 61 Rose Road, Grey Lynn. A letter from him recently stated that he was in the Hood, but no notice was given of impending transfer mid it is presumed that he was in the battleship when she was sunk on May 24. Of the normal complement of 1341 officers and men, the only survivors so far officially reported safe are Able Seaman Tilburn, Leeds, one officer and another seaman. Joining H.M.S. Philomel in 1932 Petty Officer Campbell served as leading torpedoman in the cruiser Achilles during the River Plate battle. Shortly before going to England in October las', year to train for a commission he w»as promoted to petty officer and two months after his arrival was posted to H.M.S. Hood. Petty Officer Campbell was born .-.it Coromandel and educated at the Mount Albert Grammar School.
