CARTERTON
A HAPPY GATHERING SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. (“Times-Age" Special.) The Parkvale Hall was filled on Saturday night when Privates O. Udy, T. Backhouse, E. Oliver, G. Bassett and S. Ward were entertained by the residents of Parkvale. Settlers were .present from many parts of the Car.'teuton district and the gathering was ■" wr 11 very happy one. Splendid music - was provided by Mrs V. J. Ashton’s Orchestra, and Mr Dan Jensen was M.C. Much appreciated extras were played by Miss Mary Herrick and Mr Edwards. During the evening, Mr C. Jensen. Senr., in an appropriate speech, presented each soldier guest with a very handsome watch. Mrs W. Adlam, on behalf of the Women's Institute, asked each soldier to accept a parcel of woollen garments. Private Backhouse suitably replied on behalf of the soldiers. The singing of "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” "Wish Me Luck” and “Auld Lang Syne." brought,the gathering to a close. GOLF COMPETITION RESULTS. Weather conditions were perfect for the Carterton Golf Club’s games on Saturday and Sunday. The following were the best scores: — First round for the Yule Cup: H. Dudson beat R. J. Fisher, 3 and 2; P. Nicholls beat G. Riggs, 3 and 2; C. Clark, B. Whitburn, 2 up; Harrington beat T. T. Hughes, 3 and 2. First Flight: C. K. Goodin beat W. Johansen, 1 up; Geo. Hart beat Brown, 1 up; tv. Steel beat F. Knutson, 4 and 3; S. Hill beat J. Steel, 1 up. Second Flight: K. Nix beat W. Moroney. I up; J. V. Gustofson beat R. Forbes, 2 up; M. Knowles beat Smart; E. Pankhurst beat Dwane. Third Flight: A. Broadbent beat H. Colson; W. Knowles beat J. B. Lawrence; A. R. Tankersley beat G. Pankhurst. In a medal round competition on Saturday the best cards handed in '■"’were:—G. Pankhurst, 93, 24, 69; B. ■Booth, 74, 3, 71; P. Nicholls, 80, 10, 70. A bogey competition held yesterday resulted:—E. A. Pankhurst, 1 up; Goodin and Gustofson, 1 down. ENGAGEMENT BECK—APLIN. The engagement is announced of Joan, only daughter of Mr L. J. Aplin, and the late Mrs Aplin, Carterton. to Jack Moran, eldest son of Mrs T. A. Beck, and the late Mr J. H. Beck, of Wellington. Personals. Miss Pauline Theobald, of Wellington. is Spending a few days with relatives in Carterton. Mr W. Hayden, of Holloway Street, who has been an inmate of Masterton Hospital, has returned to his home. Constable Williams, who has been on holiday, has returned to duty. Private Raetea Paku, who enlisted from Carterton. and whose wife lives in Victoria Street, is among those reported as missing in connection with military operations in Greece.
