PAPAL BROADCAST

DEFENCE OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 12.25 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, June 1. The Pope, broadcasting in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of Leo XIII.’s social encyclical “Rerum Novarum.” defended the right of the individual to be an individual and not a mere slave or official of the community. Dealing with post-war problems, the Pope said thi;ee fundamental values were the use of -material goods and also labour and the family. “Every living being has a fundamental right to make use of the earth's material goods,” he said, “and it is left to the will of man and the laws of a nation to regulate the operation, of this right. Every interference 'by the State in the field of labour should aim to safeguard and respect personal character.”
