FIRING BILLS
HOW TO LESSEN THEM. Every penny matters these days, both to you and to the nation. There are ,so many little ways in which waste can be avoided. Fires, of course, give good opportunity for saving. Bacon rinds make good "firelighters." Put them, and any bits of wood, near the front of the grate so that they blaze through the coal as the flue draws the blaze toward the .chimney. Coal dust will cake if it is damped, and will burn steadily when the fire is well alight. So will all sorts of peelings and scraps of fat, as well as the contents of the dustpan. Cinders should be sifted daily and retained. Coal will last longer on the fire if it has previously been sprinkled with ordinary washing soda dissolved in water —a dessertspoon to a quart of water. It is a good plan to cake your coal dust with this mixture. You can then shovel it into a paper bag and make a good hefty lump to put on the back of the fire. Salt sprinkled on coal has the same beneficial effect.
