WAIRARAPA UNION GAMES ON SATURDAY. NARROW WIN FOR CARTERTON. The outstanding feature of the Wairarapa Rugby Union’s senior inter-club competition, which was continued throughout the district on Saturday afernoon, was the narrow win scored by Carterton over the new Featherston team in a sparkling exhibition at Carterton. Gladstone disposed of Red Stars, at Gladstone, by a wide margin. Greytown beat Masterton in an uninspiring game at Memorial Park. Greytown’s points came from a try .;c .-red by Humphries, from a dribbling rush, and converted by R. Brunton, and an unconverted try by Hawke. Martin Parker, Greytown’s veteran captain, played an outstanding game at full-back. Mr R. Dawson was referee. CARTERTON v. FEATHERSTON. HOME TEAM’S NARROW WIN. At Carterton the local team and Featherston met and after a very hardfought game the home side were lycky to win by the narrow margin of 3 points. Line-outs were invariably won by Carterton and the scrums were evenly divided. From a scrum the ball went from Tilyard to Fitzgerald, to Thompson dnd on to Geo. Brown who went over to score. J. Brown failed to convert. Soon after Hurley sent the ball to Fitzgerald who passed to J. Brown. Thompson then passed to Geo. Brown, who went across to score his second try in a handy position for J. Brown to convert. Featherston's turn came in the secund spell when S. Morris from an opening made by Habib scored in a handy position. Habib converted. The pace was now very fast. Featherston were awarded a free kick. Hancock goaled and thus evened up the scores. I’he Featherston players made many bold attempts to win the game, but Fitzgerald and Hurley in particular were sure in defence. Just before call of time Fitzgerald goaled from a free kick and won the game for Carterton. Mr W. Grantham was an efficient referee.
GLADSTONE v. RED STARS. COUNTY TEAMS EASY WIN. Gladstone experienced little trouble m beating Red Star at Gladstone, by I. points to 3. Gladstone dominated the play throughout the match, anu aad Red Stars mostly on the defensive, fhe Gladstone back line functioned more as a team than Red Stars and the forwards showed more initiative. Tries were scored for Gladstone by J. Henson (3), L. Hopkins, C. Wyeth, L. Butcher, one each. L. Rciri kicked 2 penalty goals and converted one try and S. Henderson converted a try.
