DARLAN’S PLANS
ATTACK ON FREE FRENCH IN WEST AFRICA HEAVY SHIPMENTS OF WAR MATERIAL. MANY DESERTIONS OF AIRMEN & OTHERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 30. Admiral Darlan apparently is preparing to reconquer Free French West Africa, in accordance with a'promise to Germany, says the “Evening Standard’s” Berne correspondent. Sixteen French convoys are reported io have arrived at Dakar, laden with men. tanks, guns and armoured cars which Germany has returned to France. A considerable amount of petrol has been shipped and several squadrons of warplanes are expected to go to Morocco shortly. The shipments are being made in tremendous haste, the ships returning from Dakar in ballast, although great quantities of much-needed produce awaiting transport to France. General de Gaulle’s forces have reported activity in Dakar’s hinterland. Desertions of members of the Air Force to the Free French have reached such proportions that the Dakar authorities now allow pilots only a bare minimum of petrol for an assignment. However, another four planes reached Free French airfields recently. Military patrols get “captured”' with remarkable frequency.
