FLIGHT TO IRAN
MADE BY RASHID ALI • Collapse of Rebel Regime in Irak BRITISH FORCES CLOSING IN ON BAGDAD REGENT RECEIVES MANY ASSURANCES OF LOYALTY LONDON, May 30. The rebel regime of Rashid Ali in Iraq has collapsed and the Bagdad radio has broadcast an announcement that Rashid Ali has fled to Iran. It announced also the 'setting up of a Commission of Internal Security and the appointment of the Minister of Economic Affairs as military governor. All military formations are dissolved and all men under arms are called upon to get back into civilian clothes. An appeal is made to the population to remain calm and disciplined. Since his return to Iraq, the Regent, Emir Abdul Illah, has received many deputations giving assurances of loyalty to the legitimate regime. It is pointed out that it was obvious that the Germans, while they were engaged in Crete, could not assist the Iraqui rebels. An Air Force communique states that Italian as well as German planes have been encountered over Iraq. Three tried to interfere with reconnaissance planes west of Bagdad and one was shot down. Fighter aircraft are co-operating with the British land forces.
