NO ILLUSIONS
ENTERTAINED IN BERLIN SOME EFFECTS OF BRITISH BOMBING. MORE CUTS IN FOOD RATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) 'LONDON. May 30. The Zurich "Neue Zuerichcr’s” Berlin correspondent says that Berliners have no illusions about future R.A.F. attacks. Permanent masonry and steel shelters are replacing sandbag shelters. Berlin’s pavements are .cluttered with debris shovelled from cellars, where holes have been excavated in the walls to ensure the shelterers' escape if trapped. Berliners have now made up their minds that it will be a long war. The Hess affair has caused more far-reach-ing reactions than the German victories. A shortage of beer in Germany since Easter was at first attributed to a free supply to troops to celebrate Hitler’s birthday. It is now known to be due to a shortage of bottles and railway transport. The meat ration was again cut recently. The cold spring has also resulted in a shortage of vegetables. Only bread and potatoes are plentiful.
