REPATRIATION POLICY

PROPOSALS BV R.S.A. DEPUTATION TO GOVERNMENT NEED OF PROMPT ACTION URGED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. May 29. The report of the Repatriation Committee was considered by the R.S.A.. conference and adopted. Among its recommendations is one that a deputation should wait on the Government' | to stress the urgency of getting repatriation under way, not only because men are already returning, but because of the valuable experience to be gained while the numbers to be dealt i with are still small. The introduction of legislation setting up a National Repatriation Council, with advisory committees throughout | the country, is recommended. Both should be representative and service voluntary. Full use should bo made of the Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League for the rehabilitation of unfit and incapacitated men. The recommended duties of the Repatriation Department include the enrolling and interviewing of returned or discharged members of the forces or their dependants, recommending them to the State Advances Corporation for housing, to the Department of Lands and Survey if they are suitable for farming pursuits, and to the local advisory committees for vocational training, furniture, business loans, etc. Free educational and vocational facilities should be made available, with adequate sustenance for those awaiting employment or receiving training. Special facilities should be made available to enable members of the Public Service to reach positions that would have been available 1 to them but for their war service. To keep the minds of men alert and ac- 1 five, an educational scfieme both over- ‘ seas and throughout New Zealand is strongly recommended. (
