FEATHERSTON
SCHOOL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Featherston Home and School Association was held last evening, Miss Card presiding over a good attendance. The balance sheet and report, showing a satisfactory state of affairs, were adopted. Miss Card thanked members fox their assistance. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr R. W. Matthews; president, Miss Card; vice-presidents, Mesdames Carlyon. McKenzie, Messrs Cole and Shepherd; secretary, Mrs Saunders; treasurer, Mr Goodwin; committee, Mesdames Lawson; Halpin, Neilson, Algy, Harkness, Rasmussen, Varnham. Farrier, Hayes and Willett, Miss Mahood: delegates to dental clinic, Messrs Cole and Goodwin; representative on Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club, Mr Cole. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr and Mrs Lowell and Mr Robins for their work during the past year. It was decided that Mrs George Houghton be elected a life member of the association. It was decided to grant £l5 to the District High School for the purchase of materia], and £lO to the Primary School for the purchase of books. Red Cross Society. There was a good attendance at the first aid classes held on Tuesday night. It was reported that 11 students were in training for first aid medalions. Dr Sharp delivered the lectures and Mr J. E. Willett had charge of the practical work. The local sub-centre has despatched to the Wairarapa Centre a case containing one dozen glass covers, one dcfzen glove bags, one dozen handkerchiefs, 21 bandages, 10 sleeveless pullovers and two pairs pyjamas. The local committee is grateful to the following for donations: Machine, cretonne and old linen, Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford; chairs, Mrs Wakeley: old linen, Mrs N. Matthews; tables. Mesdames J. G. McKenzie and R. W. Matthews. Euchre Tourney. The weekly Fire Brigade euchre tourney on Tuesday night was well attended. The winners were: Ladies, Mrs A. W. Edwards 1, Mrs Saba 2; men. Mr W. Worsley 1. Mr McGuinness 2. The consolation prizes were won by Mrs Wilson and Mrs Surrey. Miniature Rifle Club. The following scores were registered at the Featherston Miniature RifleClub’s range on Monday:—C. Foster 90, K. McKenzie 95, M. McKenzie 9.3. B. Williams 98. H. McNamara 94, S. Buck 99. J. Buck 97. Mrs G. Rhodes 96, G. Rhodes 96, W. Nix 94, A. Cook 97, I. Feast 9.3, R. Rasmussen 95, L. Rasmussen 94, A. Hodder 97, Mrs Wilson 94. Home Guard. Tuesday night's parade in the Town Hall was the best attended for some weeks. Commander Hayes was in charge and all available officers were present. The section commander has had to resign his post. Mr Gain was a popular officer and members hope,that his absence will be a temporary one. The greater part of the time was z devoted to listening to an instructive address by the Battalion Commander. Captain Carter. Commanders C. Bargh and C. Corlett of the Pahautea unit were present and prevailed on Captain Carter to promise to pay a visit to their district at an early date. Some criticism of the lack of organisation on the part of the Emergency Precautions Scheme locally has been made. Post and Telegraph Office., On the King’s Birthday (June 2) the Post and Telegraph office will be elos-) ed in all branches with the exception, of the Telephone Exchange, which will remain open continuously as usual. Improvement of School Grounds. The local schoolgrounds are being much improved. A hedge has been planted along the Revans Street front-, age, and grass seed has been sown in front of the new school. The borough council is cleaning up the footpaths, all of which gives the school a very tidy appearance.
