GARDEN DIGGING
SOME TIMELY HINTS. VZhere it is necessary to dig the soil only one shovel deep, as for instance on ground that was trenched last year ordinary digging is the best method to employ. This is usually done with a spade, but it may be a good deal easier to use a digging fork where the soil is on the heavy side; or better still a shovel. Points to remember are: —First, take out a trench, the width and depth of the shovel, and place it at the other end of the plot for filling in the final trench. Insert the shovel upright, presit in to its full depth with the ball of the foot, or the heel, then throw the shovelful well forward at the same time twisting the shovel to turn the soil upside down. The lumps should not be broken, for the rough ter the soil is left, the more beneficial will be the effect of the winter frosts and rain. Digging will be rendered easier if the tool is kept clean and sharp. Masterton gardeners should always dig with a shovel. It is easier and more effective than using the out-of-date method of digging and nearly breaking your back with a spade. The Chinese always digs with a shovel.
