AFFORESTATION SCHEME
BEQUEST TO MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL. FORESTRY EXPERTS CONSULTED. Reference to the bequest made to the Masterton County Council by the late Dr. IVL Trimble, formerly county solicitor, for afforestation purposes is made in the annual report of the County Clerk. Mr J. C. D. Macklcy, who states: — "By his will. Dr. Trimble left the income in perpetuity of the residue of his estate, subject to certain life interests. for the purpose of public afforestation in the area of the'present county of Masterton. It is estimated that this' residue will amount to £20.000 and the income available for the purpose should on a conservative basis be at least £6OO per annum. This endowment will be of inestimable value to the district as the years pass by and will remain a permanent monument to his memory. Discussions have taken place with the trustees and at their request a map of the county mounted for permanent record, showing the boundaries at the date of Dr. Trimble's death, has been prepared together with a description of the county boundaries. As a preliminary to the preparation of a scheme of afforestation members of the council have been in consultation with forestry experts and have inspected some 15.000 acres of plantations administered by the Sel- ( wyn Plantation Board and the Ashburton County Council. The important question of the acquisition of certain areas of land suitable for afforestation is also under consideration."
