CARTERTON

SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CARD PARTY. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a fair attendance at the fortnightly 500 card party’held in the Bandroom under the auspices of the Home and School Association. The prizes were won as follow: —Ladies: Mesdames King, 1; Hooper, 2. Men: Messrs L. Williams, 1; G. Goodin, 2. A competition for a case of apples was won by Mrs W. Chew. ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. There was a fair attendance of officers and members at the quarterly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge held last evening and over which Sister F. Eagle presided. Sick pay amounting to £l4 and other accounts totalling £1 14s 6d were passed for payment. The election of officers for the ensuing six months resulted as follows:— N.G., Bro. H. J. Rathbone; V.G., Bro. C. E. White; E.S., Bro. G. S. Bruce; conductor, P.G. Sister Mellish; guardian, P.G. Bro. J. A. T. Stevens. The secretary was instructed to write to Bro. A. J. King, who is an inmate of Wellington Hospital, • extending to him the best wishes of lodge members and expressing the hope that he would speedily recover from his illness. It was resolved that the installation of officers take place at the next lodge meeting, and that the Loyal Masterton and other lodges be invited. It was decided that after business had been completed cards should be played and supper- provided. The retiring I.P.N.G. was thanked for her services to the lodge and her name was ordered to be placed on the honours board.

DRUIDS’ BALL A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. The annual ball of the Carterton Druids’ Lodge last night was a decided success, visitors being present from all parts of the> district. Those responsible for the management of the function are to be congratulated bn their efforts. The interior of the hall was gaily decorated with flags lent for the occasion by the Cafterton Borough Council and the W.F.C.A. The large number of people present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Udy's Orchestra provided the, music. Extras were played by Misses M. Herrick, E. Lorenzen, V. Irwin and Mr Tom Udy. The supper was a feature of the ball and reflected great credit upon those in charge. The tables were very effectively decorated with pretty autumn leaves from Miss Wolters, "Richmond.” The takings at the door exceeded £4O. The M’sC. were Messrs G. Baine, C. Sunkel, and D. Neilson. Personal Items. Mr A. G. Rabbitts has found it necessary to re-enter the Masterton Public Hospital for treatment. Mr and Mrs R. Smith have returned home from a holiday spent at Stratford. Mr E. Bond, of the staff of the Hopelands cheese factory, Woodville, was a visitor to Carterton yesterday. Mr and Mrs G. Steffert, Sent’., of Carterton, yesterday received cabled advice that their son, Private A. R. Steffert was fit and well. Miss Copeland, of Carterton, is an inmate of Masterton Hospital. Mrs W. E. Knowles's many friends will regret to learn that she is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital. Dental Clinic. A meeting of the Carterton district dental clinic will be held in the school, Holloway Street, on Wednesday, when business of importance will be transacted. Ladies’ Golf. Members of the Carterton Ladies’ Club played a Stableford and bogey round on the Carterton links on Saturday, the best cards handed in being as follows:—Stableford: Mrs Court, 35: Mrs Forbes, 33; Mrs Orr. 31; Mrs Candy. 30: Mrs Colson, 30: Mrs Johansen, 30; Mrs Moroney, 30; Miss Campbell. 29; Mrs Robinson, 29. Bogey round: Mrs Orr, 4 down; Mrs Colson, 4 down; Mrs Forbes, 5 down; Mrs Johansen, 5 down; Miss Campbell, 6 down; Mrs Campbell, 7 down; Mrs Moroney, 7 down; Mrs Robinson, 8 down; Mrs Court, 8 down. Driving Test. Inspector Nicholson, of the Transport Department, is today conducting driving tests of persons over the age of 70 years, there being a number undergoing the examination. Beautiful Frocking. For the first ball of Wairarapa's social season, held by the Druids' Lodge last night, a prominent feature was the high standard of frocking set by the women of the district. Although the dressing in general was along conservative fashion lines there were many original creations. Taffetas were featured in florals, gold, turquoise blue, sea greens and sky blues. Shades of green and cerise were popular among those who wore georgette. l Salmon pink ripple, and red embossed georgettes were also noticeable. Cream angel skin lace, burgundy velvet and lavender chiffon, white organdie, brocaded marquisette and petrol blue satin were also attractively featured.
