CARTERTON

« BOWLING CLUB MEMBER FAREWELLED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A number of members of the Carterton Bowling Club gathered at the pavilion on Saturday evening to farewell one of their members, Mr Norman Boyne, who is to take up his residence in Wellington. The president, Mr Gordon Hughan, said that Mr Boyne had been a valued member of the Carterton Bowling Club and everyone was sorry he was leaving the town. Mrs Boyne also would be missed for she had given excellent service in connection with the afternoon teas during the bowling seasons. Several other bowlers spoke in a similar strain. Mr Hughan asked their guest to accept from his fellow bowlers a barometer bearing the inscription: “To Norman Boyne from Carterton Bowlers, 1941.” Mr Boyne suitably replied.

GOLF CLUB BOGEY COMPETITION. The best cards returned in the bogey competition played on the links on Saturday were:—P. Nicholls, 3 up; R. Harrington, 2 up; L. H. Smart, 2 down; E. A. Pankhurst, 2 down. In a match for the Hill and Hughes Buttons the challengers Johansen and Colson, beat Whitburn and Gustofsen, 3/2. Women’s Institute Dance. The Parkvale Hall was filled on Saturday evening when a most enjoyable dance was held by the Parkvale Women's Institute. The music was supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton's Orchestra, and an extra was played by Mrs Williams. Mr Ashton was M.C. The prizes at the cards were won by Mrs Mellish (Featherston) and Mr Williams (second). Miss Armstrong won the ladies’ prize. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mrs H. Herrick and partner. Soldiers Entertained. The dance given in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening to two members of the Carterton Football Club, Privates Gayfer and Harp, who are attached to the Trentham Military Camp, was well attended. The music was provided by Miss M. Herrick and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr Joe Fitzgerald. During the evening Mr Austin Reid, president of the club, pre- , sented both the soldiers with hold-alls. Privates B. H. Gayfer and T. Harp, the , guests of the evening, returned to , camp yesterday.

Old Bandsman Entertained. Members of the Carterton Band, under their conductor, Bandmaster W. Spooner, serenaded their patron, Mr W. B. Allen, at the.residence of his son, Mr E. W. Allen, West Taratahi, yesterday afternoon. Mr Allen has been for eight years the band’s patron, and it has been the custom of members to entertain him once a year at his residence. Although well over 90 years of age, Mr Allen is still very interested in band music, and it is only during recent years that he has been unable to take his part in the band as an active player. Mr Allen, for the past 35 years or more has been connected with the Carterton Band. Prior to coming to the Wairarapa he played with a band at the Hutt and holds a medal dated 1882 which he received while a member of the Hutt Band. During the afternoon a very fine programme of music was played on the lawn in front of his son’s residence, the music being enjoyed by many West Taratahi and Carrington residents. At the conclusion of the band programme, Mrs E. W. Allen provided afternoon tea which was much'appreciated. Mr W. B. Allen thanked the band for their kindness. Bandmaster Spooner ■ replied after which all joined in singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.’’ Mr P. Beere extended thanks on behalf of the visitors to Mr and Mrs E. W. Allen for the afternoon tea. Druids’ Bail. Arrangements have been finalised for the annual ball of the Totara Lodge of Druids which will be held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, tonight. The ladies’ committee is busy today preparing the supper, which is always a feature of this ball.' The floor is being specially prepared for the occasion. As the Druids' ball is always popular there should be a large attendance from all parts of the district. Udy's Dance Band will supply the music. Football Matches. The Carterton B grade third team defeated Dalefield at the Showgrounds at Carterton on Saturday by six points co nil. Sunkell scored two tries for the winners. Mr W. Spooner refereed. Carterton fourths defeated Masterton fourths at Carterton by 14 points to 6. Carterton's score comprised three tries scored by J. Berry (one of which was converted), and a penalty goal kicked by Rex Lenihan. For Masterton, Gill and Smith scored tries. Mr P. Reid was referee.
